The PMP exists to strengthen local journalism. The partnership comprises 34 media outlets in a 10-county region.
Local news outlets – once viewed as essential community institutions – are diminished due to changing reader habits, loss of trust, and the decline of print and TV news. Research shows that a lack of credible news sources is linked to a decline in informed communities and erodes democracy.
The Pittsburgh Media Partnership is a community housed within the Center for Media Innovation that meets news organizations in Southwestern Pennsylvania where they are. It consists of several pillars: Professional development, editorial collaboration, operations support, a teaching newsroom, career pathways, and community engagement.
The PMP exists to help support news organizations innovate and do more – often with less – and bring leaders together for mutual benefit.
Members are offered deeply discounted rent on a first-come, first-served basis at the historic Benedum-Trees Building in Downtown Pittsburgh through the generous support of The Benter Foundation. A limited number of spots are available.
The PMP operates the only coworking space in Southwestern Pennsylvania exclusively for media outlets – which supports creating and building community around these organizations’ unique challenges and opportunities. The hub features private and shared
spaces as well as a soundproof studio for video or audio recording.
The space houses the PMP’s teaching newsroom and six other news outlets.
PMP recognizes that media outlets have unique audiences and voices. But what they share is a need for innovative approaches around building capacity at a time when independent
journalism is challenged by changes in the way news is consumed and supported by corporate interests and residents
Collectively, the reach of the Pittsburgh Media Partnership is more than 9 million.
